For BLOB data I now use the new NVARCHAR(MAX) and VARBINARY(MAX) data types with the new .WRITE extension to the UPDATE statement. For new records I use INSERT statements to create a new record without the BLOB data and then use UPDATE statements with the .WRITE extension to write the BLOB data using a buffer. That way you can write as much as you want without breaking any limits.

Do you know like I can extract and insert values to resources table by transact sql? I know do it with c#, providers etc but i want do it using transact sql sometimes.I tried several ways (convert to binary the image fields etc) but I couldnt yet.

There seems to be a bug w.r.t the implementation of RollingFlatFileTraceListener. Prior to calling the SafeMove method in the PerformRoll method , the respective writer class is closed . Now if in the SafeMove method , an exception other than IOException occurs , the writer remains in an uninitialized state .

So , Now after this if any call is made to perform Rolling of the Trace file, a NullRefernceException occurs as the writer being used is not intialized . And hence no further log files are generated .

I could not find this being fixed in Ent Lib 4.1 or any patch available for the same .

Kindly , help me sort the above issue or let me know if there is any patch available.

Hi Burak,

The discussion lists are not the same and are managed by different people. Today is the first day I have had a chance to do some forum support since you registered this discussion but I hope to be able to give you an answer at some stage, I do not know the answer at the moment however, I would suggest that you need some sort of timer so that the log gets written away either when the buffer fills up or when a time limit expires, whichever is sooner. That way your buffer will always get flushed even if it does not fill up.

Isn't there a buffering option for logging application block similar to healthmonitoring with maxBufferSize, maxFlushSize, urgentFlushThreshold, regularFlushInterval, urgentFlushInterval, maxBufferThreads etc.. parameters?

I created a CustomTraceListener based on http://entlib.codeplex.com/Thread/View.aspx?ThreadId=51701 . It's working fine but I want to add buffering capability to it.

Using an arraylist as MethodEntry holder was suggested, which is good , but what if the buffer size doesn't reach the preset number (20)? How will the list get flushed then?

Entschuldigung, es war ein Fehler im Konfigurationsabschnittshandler. "EntLibContrib.Resource.Configuration.ResourceManagerSettings" sollte lesen "EntLibContrib.Resource.Configuration.ResourceSettings". Dies muss auch in der WebResourceQuickStart web.config Datei geändert werden. Ich habe die Ursprungscode, um dies zu fixieren, in "Change Set" 36488 aktualisiert.

Sorry for the late reply, I have been out of action for a couple of months. However, I did quite a lot of work on the ODP.NET provider in July, especially with packages, which would have been after this topic was filed. Would it be possible to download the current source and see if I have already fixed this issue? I believe I removed the BuildParamterName override. If not I will take another look. I did find packages and the whole business of getting result sets back from Oracle Stored procedures quite confusing. I also created a script for building the Northwind DB on Oracle XE so I could run a standard set of Unit Tests.

Hi Devasena,

EntLib ulitmately uses standard ADO.NET commands to persist your DataSet and thus will be using a data adapter. The dataAdapter.Update() method requires an Update, Insert, Delete and Select command set or it will not operate (I thought it actually gave an exception but perhaps not?). When a DataSet is persisted to a DB The RowState is used by ADO.NET to determine what command to use, so although you might know that only Updates are required ADO.NET will complain if any commands are missing. Having said that ADO.NET does not do any checking to see if the command is valid, so you would simply need to give it a dummy command.

I have used the Logging block with Sql Server but not the CE edition as such. In theory logging to a database goes via the DAAB and as there is a Sql CE data provider then it should be possible.

Although I have stopped development of EntLib 3.1 contributions, I will try this out with the pending EntLib v4.1 Contrib release.

Environmental Overrides would work for any configuration section as long as you provide design-time support for it since it relies on the ability to load config files using configuration nodes.

On your second question, I tried specifying a ProtectionProvider for the DAAB section and create an environment where I override it. It works fine, although you do need to open the resulting file and specify the ProtectionProvider if you want a specific section like the DAAB to be encrypted.

Can you still use config protection with this approach?

Can you manually write (ie. xml) environment overrides to configure NON-application block config (ie. my app-specific config)? Is it just using xpath to find and override values?

I`m trying to use Unity and interception in MVC application.

I used source code from Mvc contrib to make container resolve mvc controtllers for me.

Then I used following code to configure container to configure interception of controllers and it also worked.

Now I can intercept all virtual methods of HomeController. Thats fine.

But then I want to use dependency injection in my HomeController. And instead of empty default constructor I create following constructor:

I configured container to know what is IMyService. When I try container.Resolve<IMyService>() it works fine.

But when I try to load the page in MVC application it throws exception:

Some strings are localized but they generally say "Parameter str, value can no be null"

I tend to use the DAAB in the following way:

IDataReader reader = this._database.ExecuteReader("mypkg.fetch_something", inputParameter, string.Empty)

where the package is something like

PROCEDURE fetch_something(inputParameter IN VARCHAR2, cur_out OUT ret_cursor)

The override of BuildParameterName causes problems because it adds a colon to the parameter names and throws a null reference exception when it can't find the parameter. I'd suggest this override be removed which would make the behavior consistent with Microsoft Oracle client or, if you really need this for executing Sql statements, not to add the colon for stored procs. Perhaps change the GetParameterValue override to something like

        {
            object convertedValue = base.GetParameterValue(command,

Hi ,

Am using Enterprise lib 3.0 in vs 2005 .

I have initially loaded the data set using load data set method . Then i store the data to a new table from the dataset . I then make few chanages in the GUI GRID that have reflected in the local table and in the dataset as well .

I dont have insert operations nor delete .I will only have update operations thru the sqlserver stored procedure .

Following is the update method which I give "nothing" for Insert , delete commands , But the changes are not updated in the sqlserver data base .

DB.UpdateDataSet(VlvDataset, "Table1",Nothing, Updatecmd, Nothing, UpdateBehavior.Standard)

Please tell me is there any way to update the DB with out having insert command and delete command
